Subterranean Aztec ruins steps

Latin America tour blog - Mexican Magic

Straight after the Cruise To The Edge, Jo and I along with guitar tech Vince flew to Mexico City to join Genetics for my Latin American tour with them. It was great to see them again… Lovely guys and great musicians. Their drummer and manager Daniel greeted us warmly and we all broke bread together in a fabulous Argentinian restaurant which became our local “canteen” for the duration!

The following day, we enjoyed some much needed time off and visited the cathedral, which is pretty old for the Americas, built in the 1500s, and absolutely massive! It’s also really beautiful with gorgeous vaulted ceilings and exquisite sculptures. However, it was built directly on top of the Aztec temple, which the Spanish invaders had recently destroyed. We visited a couple of spots just outside the cathedral where you can still see the Aztec ruins.

The cathedral precinct is equally gigantic, and immediately brought to mind the dramatic beginning of the James Bond film with a Day of the Dead parade in the street becoming a huge celebration in that huge space…

The following two days we all rehearsed hard, and then played the  first show to a huge, appreciative crowd in Mexico City!

After that, we played another successful show in Guadalajara, a vibey city we remember from before. The audience there were equally wonderful! As before, Mexico had that great colourful vibe with incredibly friendly people…

Now we’re off to play in sunny Lima, Peru, which we always look forward to!
