The Train on the Road tour really kicked off under the railway arches of Putney, whilst we were still in training for a substantially new set featuring most of the new album Out of the Tunnel's Mouth. Rehearsals began (in some cases) at a Napoleonic 5.30 in the morning for the more 'memorially challenged' members such as your very own highly strung Dr. Plankensteen...
Eventually even the tap dance of the floor pedals became second nature, but there's no substitute for doing it live to really coordinate the mind/eye/finger ballet to which we high wire acts aspire before we can join the ranks of the truly fearless fretmeisters. I always think let’s keep it dangerous and allow spontaneously combustive things to happen from night to night.
The Euro leg of the tour started in Holland’s Zoetermeer. I'd already forgotten how loud a live gig can be, especially when the crowd kick in to cheer you on. Audiences also went ballistic in Hamburg, Bochum, Limbourg, Aschaffenburg, Stuttgart, Mutzig, Berne, Paris and Lille.
To some bands, home is the road. For other less happy marauders travelling can become a mobile theatre of cruelty, but we often sleepless breed are just too deliriously intoxicated and overwhelmed by the level of enthusiasm that pours out nightly from local crowds like an angel's kiss to worry. We thrive on visiting different places and seeing new faces. We giggled like four year olds on their first visit to the seaside. Every gig was a high point from touching base with my son Oliver in Aschaffenburg to having Jo’s sister Amanda sing and play with us in Paris for the first time.
Don't miss this incredible band because all the guys are so talented and operate in the moment to such a degree that I doubt you'll see anything like it again. In my opinion these extraordinary individuals currently make up the world’s best band and I'm not kidding you!
Watch Roger King, Nick Beggs, Rob Townsend, Gary O'Toole and Amanda Lehmann take you on a musical ride of a lifetime on tour at a venue near you. People ask me how long are you on tour? I have to say with this team, for life mate!!! "See you in my drums" as Gary says...
